Tackling crime in Rochdale!
Added 27/11/2008One of the major issues is Rochdale is the fight against crime. Paul has been working hard to lead the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour.
Since taking control of Rochdale Council - we have implemented a number of measures aimed a tackling both crime and the causes of crime
THREE SIMPLE MEASURES THAT WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED INCLUDE:
- There has been additional funding of £125,000 for the Youth Service, on top of the £250,000 that we introduced last year as an on-going commitment. The Youth Service in the past year have met with over 35% of 13 to 19 year olds in the Borough. This funding should improve that even more.
- We are providing £200,000 for what is called Young Offenders Payback. Young people who are now convicted of offences should pay back something to society. Community Service is effective with adults but needs expert staffing to help youngsters. This is what this new funding will help to provide.
- We will, for the first time ever, buy four additional Police Officers from Greater Manchester Police. We know Police resources are stretched, so this money will enable Greater Manchester Police to employ an extra officer at Middleton, Heywood, Littleborough and Rochdale Police Stations. These will be four additional officers that we wouldn't otherwise have. These officers are based in schools for 50% of their time and the rest around the local community ensuring that young people know them.
Burglaries have fallen by almost 50%
Woundings have fallen by over 30%
Vehicle crimes have fallen by over 30%
Numbers of young people entering the criminal justice system for the first time have reduced year-on-year.
More people are actively engaged with treatment services for drug and alcohol misuse, and The most prevalent forms of anti-social behaviour have fallen by over 10% in the past year whilst at the same time we have put in place measures to encourage greater reporting.
