The big news over the last few weeks has been the sad death of the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police - Mike Todd. Mr Todd courageously worked hard to tackle crime at all levels and was the most accessible Chief Constable that we've ever had. I worked with Mr Todd as both Leader of the Council and as Rochdale's Member of Parliament. I know that at the last meeting of the Police Authority he was questioned on the spate of lead thefts in Rochdale by Spotland and Falinge Councillor Barbara Todd (no relation). As ever, when questioned by Barbara he gave straightforward, honest answers. Policing will miss such a strong leader. My condolences go to his wife and children at this sad time.

The weekend before last, I attended the Lib Dem Spring Conference in Liverpool alongside Council Leader Alan Taylor. This was the first Conference that we've had Nick Clegg speaking as Leader. He made an excellent speech in which he ruled out any chance of a coalition with Labour or the Conservatives come the next General Election. Following this I drove over to Ampleforth to judge a public speaking competition organised by my former Head in Bradford, John Clarke. As always the young people spoke very well and were a credit to their schools and families.

I am pleased to see that this Council have paid for extra policing across the Borough. I was out talking to residents with Councillors Barbara Todd and Jean Ashworth in Greave and on The Cray this week and overwhelmingly residents tell me that their priority is fighting crime and anti-social behaviour. By making this gesture the Council has shown commitment to support our Police. A visible police presence is a deterrent to criminal and I hope that we can invest even more in front line policing over the next few years. More...

Following my return from Bangladesh, I had a very busy weekend speaking in Southport on the Friday night and then hosting a Disability Conference at Richmond Hall on the Saturday. I was pleased that Danny Alexander, MP for Inverness was able to attend and speak. The meeting was attended by people from all over the North West including Joy Gerber from the Rochdale District Disability Action Group and Chris Spankie, Social Inclusion Unit Manager at the Council amongst many others. Topics discussed included Transport, Education, Employment and Access. Dave Hennigan, my Constituency Agent put a great deal of effort into organising the event and getting some very excellent speakers.

One thing was apparent, compared to many other towns Rochdale has much better provision for people with learning disabilities. Several concerns were raised during the meeting about transport and my office has been in touch with the Passenger Transport authority to raise these concerns. These include the provisions made for the Transport Innovation Fund Bid for the disabled and their carers.

Also on Saturday I attended the launch of a book written by Tony Young on trams in Rochdale at our Town Hall, also attended by the Mayor Councillor Peter Evans and his wife Helen. I spoke about our very successful campaign to get Metrolink 'back on track' and said that the best photo in the book in my view was that of a Metrolink tram with the destination Rochdale on its boarding board! It was good to see many people there including George Kelsall who is selling the book as well as Ken Hall who has made several excellent models of old Rochdale trams. The books are on sale at Touchstones this weekend if anyone is interested in buying a copy. More...

One of the most important topics discussed in Parliament this week has been the legislation to nationalise Northern Rock. This has been a long and tortuous process which has so far cost the taxpayer £100 billion in loans and millions in fees to lawyers and firms advising both the government and the two private consortiums that bid to run the bank.

For New Labour to nationalise anything has been a painful process which they have striven at all costs to avoid. This dithering and delay has cost us the taxpayer but more importantly cost Britain's reputation as a world financial centre.

It has also damaged the reputation of both the Prime Minister and the Chancellor. As Vince Cable MP, our Shadow Chancellor who visited our Town last year, said at the start of the debate it is tempting to say I told you so. More...

The last ten days continue to be extremely busy both in Westminster and in Rochdale. Following the floods in which areas in both Littleborough and Central Rochdale were affected I've had discussions with several people. These include Councillors Peter Evans, Zulfiqar Ali and Greg Couzens alongside Council Officers like John Patterson.

It is apparent to me that there is a need for much greater co-ordination between the Council, United Utilities and the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency has admitted as much in a report they've just published on the floods last summer. Their report could be applied equally to what happened here so I've secured a debate from the Speaker next Wednesday in Westminster Hall on flooding in Rochdale.

I expect the Minister replying will be my neighbouring MP Phil Woolas, so it will be an all Rochdale affair! I intend to press the case for a Flooding Act with clear lines of responsibility and increased investment to protect areas at risk of flooding. More...
