Rowen keeps the faith

Added 01/07/2009

Paul Rowen, MP for Rochdale, is fighting to keep water drainage costs down for churches and other faith buildings, community, amateur sports groups, and Guide and Scout Associations.  Paul Rowen, MP for Rochdale, commented, “This is a deeply concerning issue. These non-profit organisations should not be allowed to suffer. A moratorium does not go far enough. OFWAT should make demands of United Utilities to end this situation as quickly as possible. After much persistence, progress is finally being made. I shall do everything in my power to ensure the right thing is done”

On 16th March 2009, United Utilities announced that the increased costs of water drainage for faith buildings, community amateur sports groups, and Guide and Scout Associations would not be charged for the 2009-2010 billing year. However, concerns still exist over the proposed increased prices for the next billing year.

Paul Rowen continued, “This proposed increase in prices could have devastating effects, including failure to maintain clubs and pay coaches, on sports clubs such as Rochdale Cricket, Lacrosse and Squash Club. I have written to OFWAT on this issue. Following weeks of persistence including debates in Westminster, and Parliamentary questions, OFWAT are reconsidering their guidance.”

NOTES

1. Churches and Mosques could be badly affected by the increased costs.
2. Increased cost for amateur sports groups could be passed onto members in the form of increased subscriptions, which would mean fewer people playing sport.
3. Due to pressure from Rower, Secretary of State for the Department of the Environment has issued guidance to OFWAT on the matter.
