Rowen Slams Government on Youth Unemployment in Rochdale
Added 04/03/2010Rochdale MP Paul Rowen has this week criticised Deputy Labour Leader Harriet Harman on youth unemployment in Rochdale. During Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Rowen condemned the Government for failing young people.
Five years ago a young person in Rochdale claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance would have to wait an average of 8 months before finding a job. This figure now stands at around 18 months and is the highest figure in the North West. This means young people in Rochdale are unemployed for eight months longer than the region's average.
Paul Rowen MP said: "This is a huge tragedy for the young people of Rochdale. This Labour Government is failing a generation of people and a lot more needs to be done to tackle this crisis. Young people need practical help as soon as they find themselves out of work; with more emphasis on building up skills, and more opportunities for internships and apprenticeships
